World Energy Day 2017: Reduction of Carbon emission to Mitigate Climate Change.

World Energy Day 2017: Reduction of Carbon emission to Mitigate Climate Change.
The World Energy day has come and gone but left us with some remarkable footprint on the sand of time. As the world marked the energy day and the advocacy is for a sustainable environment for human living. Nigeria will continue to remain a potential global competitor in the renewable energy industry even though this energy sources are still underutilized .
Let begin with what carbon emission means in the 21st century. When carbon is emitted into the atmosphere from human and machine activities, the accumulation of the emission causes a blanket in the cloud which leads to warming. This warming causes climate change. This is evident in our environment such as sudden flooding; land slide, wild fire etc.
The demands of climate change and the 21st century information based society requires the development of renewable energy resources, and energy efficiency resources.
The Energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction among other leading information and communications technology solutions, radical new power systems architectures and innovative market mechanisms to support increasing renewable energy deployment and the electrification of transportation and heating in the world today are cutting across business and industrial sectors.
According to the president of Nigerian energy association he said Nigeria can focus beyond oil by using our gas especially in the urban areas and for the rural we will have tap into the renewable sources like solar wind etc. Studies have shown that green energy especially in china has been a solution.
Energy economist advocates responsibility in supply for sustainable energy for all. A right energy mix is possible and Nigeria is also exploiting the more renewable sources.
At the moment, about 12 million Nigerian are subscribing to meter payment out of the 200 million and a few out of the 12 million is exploiting the vast renewable sources in the air even though the cost is far higher than the supply.
Unlike the developing World, the developed counties like  United States, United Kingdom is ahead of the curve for example the United kingdom has a target of 2040 to divert to renewable sources.
The issue of energy transition is paramount so as not to be left behind. It is incumbent that Nigerian government out in place actionable plan is expedient. Focus on Nigeria beyond oil. In terms of the legal of Nigerian framework and technology support to support the transition is not there
The energy mix especially in electricity generation is dominated by gas and that is what is fed into the grids. Nigeria is well endowed in the area of solar hydro and we are not doing much about that.
The government can leap frog the process by providing enabling environment to support the growth. A great gap still exist in the international space on how to balance flow with the world and the Nigerian case.
